A few months ago I received an email from a client letting me know that they had nominated our business, Islanda, for the Croydon Business Excellence Awards 2022 in the category of Business Commitment to Education, Training and Skills.
I was so touched by this gesture and felt, first hand, the impact of receiving an unexpected ‘gift’.
Motivation is an interesting subject, with many organisations using extrinsic motivation in the guise of job titles, salary and bonuses to motivate staff.
Don’t get me wrong, this is important (to some more than others).
However, extrinsic motivation at best, tends to illicit performance ‘up to’ what you pay for. If you give less than promised or expected then this can be demotivating resulting in lower performance.
Indeed, extrinsic motivation works best when it goes beyond your expectations – then it makes you feel valued and motivated to give more back.
In contrast, intrinsic motivation, borne from doing what you enjoy, aligned with your core values enables you to deliver your best, over and above what is demanded.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, this testimonial, in the form of a nomination, was a great motivator. To continue to invest in our valued relationship with this client and to ensure that we lived up to their recommendation of our services.
We feel like winners whatever the end result – although that would be the icing on the cake!
We have now been told we are finalists!
One step closer…
