2021 – A New Cricket Season Beckons!
Despite lockdown stopping almost everything, especially the consumption of Pilgrim beers, it has been a very eventful few weeks since the first edition of Sanderstead CCTV News. We launched our very first Crowdfund to buy much needed new nets, a burst water pipe in February’s “big-freeze” flooded our pavilion, and we are gearing up for our AGM this week on Zoom – I wonder how many cats will join us?
In this edition of SCCTV News we have the following:
- “Lockdown Heroes” – a focus on those Sanderstead members who have made the most of the extra time and boredom to do something really special and inspire us all,
- An update on our Crowdfunder,
- A round up of new video updates to our YouTube channel
- Partner news, with a feature on BlackKnightBats
- Codgers Corner – with a feature on the Surrey Seniors Cricket Association
- And our Welsh correspondent brings us another bit of cricket eccentricity with “When Cricket Was Cricket”…
Our aim is to bring you the fun side of grass roots cricket here at Sanderstead and we hope this newsletter provides a welcome distraction to the goings on in the real world! And why not?
How Some Sanderstead Members Have Made the Most of Lockdown!
In the UK we find ourselves deep into our third lockdown which, after a ‘no family’ Christmas, has been a real drag affecting people in different ways.
However, there have been a few who have taken the opportunity to look for the silver lining in the cloud, and used the extra time available to them to pursue something positive to get them through. Here are four excellent examples of how the Sanderstead spirit has kept four of our members going and hopefully there’s some inspiration here for us all.
A bit of Lockdown Fun
join us in our fundraising festivities…
With our usual fundraising activities curtailed by the COVID restrictions we have decided to do something different and try our first ever crowdfund to raise money for new nets to replace our existing ones that are no longer fit to serve our growth in membership with players from 7 to 70 (girls and boys).
Here’s a taste of some of the fantastic rewards we have on offer:
£10 gets you entry to our 2021 Fantasy Cricket League which is always great fun as you can pick and manage your own team from your favourite SCC players.
£15 gets you a shout out on one of our videos – Dan, our commentator – will personally mention your name, your club and anything you like (as long as it’s clean and short – just like The Cornish Kohli)
£25 enables you to sponsor a player for the season! A bit like sponsoring an endangered animal, the player you sponsor will send you updates throughout the season so you can follow their progress personally.
And for the ‘superfans that can’:
£50 or £60 makes you a match sponsor for a Sunday game or a Saturday League match! You will have a match filmed in your name and you can be a guest of honour at The Old Saw Mill if you can get to us. If you can’t get to us, we will feature you in the video somehow! Dan will find a way.
£50 donation will get your name on an honours board, or for £100 your name will be on a special bat – both board and bat will be forever displayed in our pavilion – you will also become a lifelong virtual member of SCC and be welcomed any time to join us for a beer in the bar! There will be a surprise, personalised, gift for you as well.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated in these strange and difficult times so we can continue to provide entertaining (and hopefully amusing) club and village cricket. Here’s a link to our Crowdfunder page where you will find full details of the campaign & the numerous rewards so that any donations made can be repaid with something of value.
As Dan would say, “And why not?”
Many thanks and best wishes from all of us at Sanderstead CC
With no new cricket to film, we have limited options for new video uploads. However, we have released the following since the start of the year (click the underlined title to see the video):
Codgers and their Ailments! – a hilarious discussion among Sanderstead’s codgers about their numerous aches, pains and illnesses. It’s a wonder they can play cricket at all!
Sanderstead vs Epsom – This is a “10 minute” reduced edit of the third league game of the truncated 2020 season vs Epsom. The Epsom track was a road and runs flowed aplenty….
Crowdfunder for New Nets at Sanderstead CC! – a short video we put together to explain why we need new nets, and some of the fun rewards available for anyone who wants to support us.
Sanderstead vs Kingstonian Sept 2018 – This is a “10 minute” reduced edit of the final 1st XI league match of the 2018 season. These two teams that usually produces tight finishes – not this time, though as the match was all over before lunch, let alone tea!
SandersteadCCTV’s Silly Point #14 – our latest “vodcast” with Dan Allen and Tyler Ward bring you all the latest news, views and all things silly, but in video form! Includes a run through of some of the best (and worst) run outs we’ve captured on film.
And if you want to capture moments of cricket magic at your club, you need to get a camera and find someone willing to learn how to “join the revolution” of clubs filming their own matches, building membership and supporters, and ultimately a more solid financial future. Our cameraman, Dan Allen, has created an online course, using leading course creation platform Kajabi. Watch the video below explaining all about it. Alternatively, go straight to the course using the button below.
New Season Offer – 20% off using code SCCTVMAR20 until 31 March

Memoirs of a Village Cricketer
From Andy, our Special Foreign (Wales) Correspondent
As a regular SCCTV YouTube viewer and comment maker, Dan invited me to make a contribution to the SandersteadCCTV newsletter. Some cricketing anecdotes from my career, perhaps, ones not necessarily focused around the consumption of beer.
I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter and that you are looking forward to a full, sunny, cricket season when Spring arrives. If you know anyone who might enjoy what we do at Sanderstead CCTV please share this with them so they can sign-up. Any comments, suggestions, questions or constructive feedback please email me, Dan Allen, at the address below.
